I don't think that will answer Alan's question.

Alan: I think what you're seeing in the case of such "controls in menus" is actually a deception on the part of the NSStatusItem and/or MenuExtra (Apple's private SPI for items such as the volume menu item). The displayed UI is not a menu at all, simply a small window designed look like one.

So to design your own such menu, you'd have to basically invent a window that looks right and then display it at the appropriate time.

If drastic customization of a menu being displayed in the ordinary menu bar is required, you can get quite a few special effects as a Carbon application, but I don't think you can manage this from a Cocoa application without a great deal of hacking.

One quick simple question: how do I make a menu like the volume one in the
menu bar. I need to place a control in a menu. Any ideas?

Thanks everyone, Alan
