I've been successfully using (in limited circumstances) the following heuristic:


The attributes are uniform for the entire string, and consist of no more than

- an NSFontAttribute which is equal to [NSFont userFontOfSize: 0.0]
- an NSParagraphStyleAttribute which is equal to [NSParagraphStyle defaultParagraphStyle]


You could see if that works for you...
