NSBezierPath *p = [NSBezierPath bezierPathWithOvalInRect:r];

p is nil when I run this code. NSBezierPath is defined in AppKit so there seems to be some required initialization that hasn't happened yet in main(). I copied this code to an IBAction of another project and it ran fine.
