OK, it seems the bug was in a totally unrelated part of my code:

I was doing this:

[SomeObject NonExistantFunction];

Strangely, calling this NonExistantFunction broke out of the normal code flow, and jumped back into the user event processing. Making it look like the HTML had been executed, but it hadn't really been. I would have expected such a situation to simply crash the app, not silently ignore the bug and go back to normal user event processing.
