Is it possible to determine what document type NSAttributedString will interpret a path/NSData object as without doing the full interpretation? (i.e. just sniff enough of it to determine NSDocumentTypeDocumentAttribute, then bail?)

We don't currently expose that functionality. I can tell you how to sniff the types that NSAttributedString currently understands, but I don't have a neat solution that will evolve with future changes.
