I don't actually know how to do this, but WebKit (http:// webkit.opendarwin.org) released a version few days back that has a window exactly like this (like the HUD windows Apple uses) for their web inspector. Perhaps it may be worth it checking out their code? The post on their dev blog is http://webkit.opendarwin.org/blog/?p=41
