Thanks, Camillo. Definitely some interesting drawing utilities in there that I hadn't noticed. I see that they became public in 10.3, which I might be amenable too. I also see however that they are poorly documented, outside of the HITheme.h header file.

Does anybody have any advice? It doesn't have to be so much like a real menu. That is, it won't need things like hierarchical displays or keyboard shortcut symbols, etc. But it needs to present text in the menu font against the faintly-striped background (fortunately I think that's the standard window background).

When you want to emulate the look of standard UI elements in a custom view, use the HITheme API.
