I'd suggest using AppleScript so that iPhoto does the work of
interpreting its private file formats. This means that you don't have
to continually make updates when the file format changes, and makes
it considerably less likely that your software will inadvertently
trash a user's iPhoto library.

Also, updating iPhoto's private files whilst it's running is a recipe for disaster.
