Creating PDF file attachments

My app needs to add a file attachment to a PDF file. I don't mean a page attachment, of the type that PDFKit supports, but rather a document-level attachment, of the type that Acrobat and a few libraries support.
The only way I know of to do this to use either pdflib, which costs $10,000, or iText from lowagie.com, which is open source but is in Java. I've never learned Java.
Is there a Cocoa-friendly way to go about this? Apple Developer Support couldn't provide anything, but I thought I should ask here before I order a book on Java.
