What I meant to say was that MS Applications (MSWord, WordPad, etc.)
in some cases do not follow their own implementation. If you create
an RTF file in MSWord, you cannot guarantee that it will be read the
same way by WordPad and vice-versa.

You cannot rely on Windows compatibility. Microsoft uses its own
implementation of RTF which is, of course, different from the
standard implementation. If it is crucial for you to use RTF I
recommend a book called 'RTF Pocket Guide' by Sean M. Burke
(O'Reilly) that explains what you should avoid when building an
'universal' RTF file.
Wait a minute --- I thought Micro$oft owns the RTF 'standard'.
Has this situation changed? If Micro$oft indeed owns the
RTF 'standard', how can they be producing non-'standard'
RTF ?
