I finally discovered a solution. I was noticing that the scroll bar was appearing properly if I had added a new item to be displayed by the table. So, I looked at what was I doing after I added a new item, versus when I first displayed the table that I was not doing. When I reloaded the table's data ( [myTable reloadData] ), this solved my problem, and the scroll bar now appears properly.

How? Table views can not hold data themselves. So where does it get the data from?
