Likely we need to see more source but I bet you can figure this out yourself if you use ObjectAlloc to track the call stacks related to each of the retains/releases.

now one of the temporary windows I create is being retained. A lot.

...stepping back... what is the real issue you are having? The window isn't getting released? ...or are you just noticing retain/release messages?
