window title (newbie question)

Hello all.
I'm sure this is a simple thing to do, but I'm having trouble giving new windows a title. At which point in the window creation do we assign the title, and where is the set window title command? I've seen it done in code, but I can't seem to get it to work for me. I guess I'm putting the set window title call in the wrong place, so that's why I'm asking where it goes. My windows always have either no title, or some default that I'm not sure where it comes from.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Even a pointer to documentation on this is fine, I've found a few, but I'm apparently not looking in the right place, because I can't find a simple straight to the point sample that does nothing but set a title. <grumble>
Thanks much.
