The short answer is that you can't quite do what you want--without
AppleScript, that is, or without extensive workarounds that may not be worth
the trouble. But if you *do* think it's worth the trouble you may want to
look into building a Safari plugin/extension, or using services
<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/SysServices/SysSe
rvices.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/10000101>

Interapplication communication is essentially limited to ApppleScript
(including automator), services, and low-level signals.
