There must be something you're not telling us, something that's specific for this project / class. If you create a new project and define a subclass to NSObject, I'm sure that you will be able to allocate instances of that class. So, what is the difference between this particular project / class, and such a sample project. If you figure that out, you probably have the solution to your problem. I don't think that anyone here can help you further, at least not without more information.
