This sounds very Windows 3.1 to me. Mac apps don't do this.

Safari's address field doubles as a progress bar.
It's not the same as a real progress bar; it lacks the ripples and the animation effects. It's a much simpler look. I suspect that the full-on Aqua progress bar would look bad in Safari's address bar :)
