So what I am doing now is using the AppleEvents to send quit application to
all the open .app applications, which works great. Now the problem I am
having is that I am using system("/sbin/shutdown -r now") to cause the
reboot, but the system command is returning error 32256 which I have no clue
what that means. Now this is after applying the 10.2.8 combined update, and
not restarting after it is installed. We are installing the patches manually
with installer so we need to handle the restart.

Indeed, but the original poster was inquiring about support for
Jaguar. In my experience, just about AppleScript-related in Jaguar is
sketchy at best.
