setSelectedTextAttributes not fully supported?

I'm trying to force the field editor for a window to display selected text in a particular color. NSTextView's setSelectedTextAttributes method seems to fit the bill as it says that it can be used to change the following attributes for selected text: text color, background color, and underline. However, there's this caveat: "Typically only the text background color is used."
I've been able to change the background color of the selected text in the field editor, but any attempt to change the foreground color seems to have no effect. Does that mean the default field editor ignores this attribute? Is there an easy way to change the color of the selected text (short of creating my own field editor)?
