Animating a drag and insert operation

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone know the best way to go about animating a drag and insert operation where the items around move to make way for the dragged item? I was thinking of using a NSMatrix of NSImageCell which hold an image representing an object, but I'm not sure how to animate the action or if it is available using some other class. If I'm not making sense think of the Dock, and how you can insert icons and move them around and that should give you some idea. Anyone have any ideas/pointers?
