The problem with this is you can't internet enable your disk image, and this
might make sense for you.
If your disk image contains only one file (your program), and it's internet
enabled, must users will have "open safe files" checked and OS X will mount,
copy, eject and delete the disk image all automatically, leaving your app in
the downloads location. (Users who don't use Safari or have unchecked "open
safe files" get the regular disk image, and most of them know what to do
with it. You can still add a background image for those users with
instructions, just don't add the symbolic link.)
Now if Apple went one step further and moved it to Applications folder or
prompted for the move that would be perfect. They could even prompt to
launch the app. They said they will be making this process easier in future
version of OSX, I hope that means Leopard.
