I use ".icns" in my toolbar and, I don't have the sharpest eye,
but I just assume it's using the closest size the same as the
application icon does. Indeed, when I inspect the image I set on
the toolbar item at runtime, it has multiple representations as
expected.
I tried that, but it doesn't seem to use a different representation
for the toolbar when in "Use Small Size" mode. It could be that the
toolbar would display a proper icon if available, but when I use
icon composer to create the icons the only sizes that I can provide
are 128, 48, 32, 16. But only size 32 is ever used, probably
because the toolbar icons are still larger then 16*16 even in small
mode.
Anyway I don't necessarily want to work hard for for this, I was
just wondering if was something that other people were doing.
Just use PDF, its open, it works, its resolution independent. (I use
vector based editor to make my icons)
For file and application icons (shown in the finder), well, I haven't
tried to use PDF, I always assumed it wanted icns files...
