Document Metadata

In general, how are we supposed to save metadata with a document? Although resources are deprecated, they're handy for saving some per- document state values like BBEdit does with the window size, cursor position, etc. How are we supposed to do this in a modern OS X way? Can we use Spotlight metadata stuff for this? I'm not sure how general-purpose of a use that's for.
