Well, if you near enough to my machine to insert a FireWire cable,
then you are also able to insert a boot-CD.

Yes, but you can disable booting from external devices using firmware passwords. In a school lab, you might want students to be able to connect their iPods but not be able to root the machine without arousing some suspicion.
