Hopefully this is not an OT...
We are creating software to be distributed on CD, but
the exec-in-charge of the project is not interested in
such authorization methods as serialization or USB dongles
for the current version. (For the future versions, we are
considering several online-serializable methods, however).
We had an even simpler method in our older versions that
was very 'open', and so we are aware of our product
floating around on P2P.
So, for the time being, I am looking for a very simple 'dongle'
method where our authorization routine looks for a 'key' file on
a CD.
I remember being able to do something similar to this during
the Golden Age of Floppies and Tapes by intentionally 'damaging'
the file header(s), but I haven't done anything cheezy as that
in years and I have no idea how such files interact with today's
Disk Utility and various other tools that can dupe CDs.
I realize this would make our software still easily hackable,
but our software will be evolving quickly, making earlier
versions obsolete just as fast. Most of our customers are
'power' users in broadcast and film, very honest, and the
majority acquire latest HW/SW upgrades on a very regular basis.
We already have the pipeline for future versions (where we
will hopefully incorporate an online serializer), so hopefully
this CD method will allow us to get the current version
'out the door'.
Thanks in advance,
