Where did you find this information out? According to [NSImage
imageFileTypes] (or whatever, I'm typing from memory),
NEF files are supported, and I read that since Tiger, NEF was a
supported image type. No mention of it only being
half-arsed support.

NSImage apparently does not handle the NEF (and other RAW)
contents, so all you get from (the TIFF-like) file with an embedded
thumbnail TIFF / JPEG is: *drums and spot on* the thumbnail.
Some other technologies like ImageIO incorporate an (usually
outdated) version of dcraw. That's what you probably get when you
use CIImage...
