progress bar while creating a file

Hi all,

I'm writing the UI for an application that creates a very large file. The file is being saved to the desktop as it is being created. I'd like it to be possible to have a download-type progress bar on the file's icon as it is being created. But, before I announce this to the person who will have to alter their code to allow it, I'd like to have some idea of how they might be able to do it.

Can anyone suggest ways to do it?
