There are actually two ways, object-first and verb-first. My tutorial on
getting started with Cocoa Scripting illustrates object-first. You can find
it in the last chapter of the second edition of my AppleScript book, which
also illustrates verb-first; or there's an earlier version of the tutorial
here:

The discussion in the book is much more extensive (as I say, it also talks
about verb-first), but the online tutorial will get you started at least.
