In the end I have filed a bug report on it requesting that:

* parentWindow should work for NSDrawerWindow

* Documentation for NSDrawerWindow

* NSWindow should offer a highestParentWindow method for getting the window of an object regardless of whether it is in a drawer or window

Yes, there is. It's a private class in the AppKit, as Mike stated in his first message.
