Hi!
Aha! I didn't know that. I haven't really checked. Then it might be
better if Apple makes some kind of plugin architecture for Mail.app,
or maybe release documentation for whatever format they use on the
mail-boxes now.
There is a problem with some mails sent from Windows boxes. I like to
have my mail list in threaded view, but some mails appear outside of
the thread they should have been in.
I don't know exact what criteria Apple use for determining which
thread a mail should be in, but I'd guess that they first look at the
thread-ID.
In absence of thread-ID I would think that they use the subject.
Unfortunately some Windows applications behave incorrectly. A reply
usually includes "Re: " prepended to the original subject. Too often
I see "Sv: " instead, which is "Re: " translated into swedish. This
is in violation with the standard. It should always be "Re: "
regardless of language.
The mail client can however show a localized version, but not use it
in the mail header.
I have hundreds of mail that is not threaded correctly, or that are
sorted incorrectly because the senders date was not set properly.
This is what I'd like to correct.
Best regards
Daniel Strom

Actually, Mail quit using mbox when OS X 10.4.0 was released.
