Registering software

I'd like to distribute my application by web download. I'd also like to implement a registration number system for activating the application. (i.e. The prospective customer can download and use a limited version for free, but must input a registration number to access all of the features.) Can someone suggest some documentation where I could learn how to incorporate a registration key into the software?
