Interapp communication

Ok, after working through a few things, I'm down to one question. Can I send a message to another application using Cocoa? Like Apple Events for example. I'd really like to send a "paste" command to Safari. Is this possible?

thanks in advance,

In my case, my app will pop up a window to let the user select something from a list, then return back to the current app. I want to be able to paste something into a text field(for me, in a web browser) based upon what the user selected.

I can see this being possible with services, but I was wondering if there was another way. Perhaps setting a string to the general pasteboard then sending a paste message to the frontmost app?

Thanks for any ideas,
