C strings

Just a general question,

why is it when I use the cStringUsingEncoding method, my resulting strings values are VERY high?

to illustrate what I mean, here is the output of a bit of code:

t 1952805748 ` 167789152 \340 -1073751072 0 \220 -1868807536

i printf'ed the char, then its integer value. As you can see, the integer values of the chars are FAR too high to be normal ASCII values.
What is going on??? _______________________________________________
