View like the ones in Onlife and iCal

Hi everyone. I'm trying to make a table like the one found in Onlife or iCal (they have the same behaviour).
What I want to do is have a table that reacts to clicks higlighting columns. I can't use a simple NSTableView because my view also has other behaviours.
I notices in both Onlife and iCal that if you resize the window, only some columns resize, the first column on the left stays the same. This make me think that the view is composed of other items, views, or maybe cells.
Can someone advise me how to do that?
Thank you very much.
Cheers.
