Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, this does not seem to solve the problem.
According to the information provided by Avtivity Monitor and Console, the spell server is indeed launched automatically the first time it is needed, i.e. either when one of the commands \"Spelling...\" or \"Check Spelling\" is invoked or, if \"Check Spelling as You Type\" is active, at the end of the first complete word. However, I still get the message \"Couldn\'t contact Spell Server\" and no request seems to be passed to the spell server.
I then tried to launch it manually by issuing the command
nohup /Users/.../Library/Services/stavekontroll.service/Contents/MacOS/stavekontroll &
(is this what you meant?) in a terminal window just after login, before the spell server was launched automatically. The resulting process did not seem to be recognised by the spell checker, though, as the system repeatedly tried to launch a second instance of the spell server, which obviously was bound to fail as the same spell server (or the service it provides) cannot be checked in twice.
Why would a running spell server not be contacted? This really confuses me.
