Yup, that's what I meant by

Apple using a private framework (in which case I would do without the slideshow)

Not only this is a private framework with all problems which that can cause; besides, there seems to be no API there to create a slideshow for a list of files; instead an image data source object seems to be used. Although of course the data source protocol could be hacked out, for my current application it is not worth the hassle.
