I'm actually quite interested in hearing ideas on how to produce
PDF's from a command line app I am programming as well. As far as
TeX goes, I do think it produces a very nice output, but
unfortunately it requires a large install of "stuff" in order for
it to work.
That's one thing groff has going for it - it's shipped with the OS.
Pstopdf is included with libxml, which I think started shipping with
Panther. So there's little to no "stuff" to install.
