This can be achieved with the SystemConfiguration framework. The key State:/Users/ConsoleUser will return a dictionary containing the short username, the user ID and group ID. The book Advanced Mac OS X Programming has two examples that use the SC framework. ADC also covers the framework.

How can I get the user ID number (501, 502, etc.) ?

It is not in -[NSProcessInfo environment]; I can't find any BSD function
that gives it either.

Thanks,
