I'm not sure if that memory usage is excessive, but I have seen that
NSURLConnection does seem to leave things hanging and have filed a

Well it seems pretty excessive to me in general (though may just be
what NSURLConnection uses).
Roughly 1,5 years ago, I verified and reported a leak regarding
synchronous URL connection calls.
The problem appeared some years ago, got fixed and appeared/
disappeared with
different OS X releases. As far as I remember, async calls behaved
nicely.
I'm not sure regarding the state of this bug reports regarding
current systems/your
system.
