Maybe not for third parties, but for Apple the associated costs (and benefits) are obviously different. Also, with longer intervals between OS releases, books would seem to have a longer shelf life too, making publishing more lucrative in general.


PDFs are available along with the HTML so you could print it if you wanted to.

I like pdfs for reference, but for learning a new subject, it's not an alternative for a well written, and printed, book. The reactions to 'the Quartz book' may serve as proof that this is a sentiment shared by other developers as well.


I look forward to owning 'the book' on Objective-C 2.0, and 'the book' on Core Data. (to name just two subjects worthy of thorough printed manuals)
