Is there documentation that states this isn't reliable? The existence
of -[NSView sortSubviewsUsingFunction:context:] seems to imply there
is a very specific order in the way subviews are drawn and that that
order can be changed. Both of which would be required for reliably
overlapping views.

If your views never draw in the overlapping portions, you may be OK,
