Perhaps you have one of NSShowNonLocalizedStrings or
NSShowNonLocalizableStrings set in your preferences. See the bottom
of this document:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPInternational/Articles/StringsFiles.html
NSCells also look at NSShowNonLocalizableStrings during on-screen
display.
