I may be waaaay off, but here are two things that helped me squash bugs that drove me nuts:

-Rebuild the nib-file from scratch. Stupid thing to do, but it helped at some point, though admittedly this was after I upgraded from Panther to Tiger.

-Implement copyWithZone. If you have a subclass that has some objects as ivars, be sure to implement copyWithZone as otherwise the implementation of the superclass will be used, which does not retain/ copy your ivar. However, this ivar may be released with the subclass when its implementation of dealloc is called. You may not be using copy yourself, but it may be called by the appkit.
