Or cut out the middle man and just hit command-D (duplicate).

What you're describing annoyed me to no end until I found a simple solution: select any one of the NSPopUpButton menu items, then hit command-C (copy) followed by command-V (paste). As you paste the copied item, it gets added as a new item. Repeat the paste operation as many times as you need, then edit them as desired.
