1. Don't trust executable names.
2. Only processes that connect to the window server have process serial numbers. Background daemons that don't connect do not have one.
3. You might try looking at http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/PIDFromBSDProcessName/index.html which is some happy fun sample code.
