Im using a NSViewAnimation to shrink one and expand the other
subview... not exactly a timer but close
The thing is we have a Thumbnail view (kinda like iphoto) on one side
and when the splitter is moved it enter liveresize and draws faster
and optimised... but not when done programaticly.

Have you tried to use a NSTimer and add or remove 1 pixel each time
the timer fires?
