Getting color table info from an NSImage

I need to export images in Windows ICO and BMP formats. The NSImage BMP calls just don't seem to work right for me. Can someone tell me what a good approach would be to push NSImage to make an image rep with a 256 color color table ?

I have a kludge for now that converts the NSImage into an 8 bit GWorld but the results vary especially when the source image for NSImage was a GIF. Most times it looks really bad. Jpegs work better.
