No, I mean things that appear on-screen as a single character

characters" if you like). In that case, "à" (not "a`") with a "b"
in place
of the "a".
Your mail app just mangled Clark's message. My app showed the
combined form just fine.
Just try it out yourself; you'll see that it works.
