Well, when you say, "As far as I know, X is not a good thing," what
do you expect people to think you mean?
I don't see anything in that technote that says QT + QTKit is not
recommended. In fact, the entire technote exists to show you how to
gain additional media functionality by mixing QuickTime's C API with
the Cocoa QTKit API.

Well, I didn't say I read somewhere it was a bad thing. Neither was
I sure it's bad to mix them. I just suspected that it may be not
recommended as several places in Apple documentation mention some
issues in this case, like

However, I didn't state that it's bad or not bad; I just asked if
it was bad. And, if it isn't, is it recommended?
And anyway, back to the original question: what is the recommended
way to handle movie playback progress? One of 1-4 proposed in my
original post? Or something else?
