Well, when you say, "As far as I know, X is not a good thing," what do you expect people to think you mean?

I don't see anything in that technote that says QT + QTKit is not recommended. In fact, the entire technote exists to show you how to gain additional media functionality by mixing QuickTime's C API with the Cocoa QTKit API.

There is nothing wrong with mixing the C QuickTime API and QTKit. How do you think iMovie works?

Where did you read mixing the two was a bad thing?

Well, I didn't say I read somewhere it was a bad thing. Neither was I sure it's bad to mix them. I just suspected that it may be not recommended as several places in Apple documentation mention some issues in this case, like
http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2005/tn2138.html

However, I didn't state that it's bad or not bad; I just asked if it was bad. And, if it isn't, is it recommended?

And anyway, back to the original question: what is the recommended way to handle movie playback progress? One of 1-4 proposed in my original post? Or something else?

Best regards,
Sergey.
