It's rather surprising the docs didn't help - this is one of the
most fundamental Cocoa concepts to grasp and is thoroughly covered in
many places in the documentation:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/
LoadingResources/CocoaNibs/chapter_3_section_7.html
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/
LoadingResources/CocoaNibs/chapter_3_section_2.html
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/
CocoaFundamentals/CoreAppArchitecture/chapter_7_section_6.html
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/
EventOverview/EventArchitecture/chapter_2_section_6.html
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/
EventOverview/EventHandlingBasics/chapter_4_section_6.html
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/MenuList/
Tasks/EnablingMenuItems.html
... just to name a few.
