If you can tell me a way of preserving newlines and
also handling malformed xml then it would be a great
help.

MPWXmlKit (available from my web-site) has levels where it can handle non-well-formed XML and preserve the exact original representation. In essence, it just gives you pointers/references into the original XML file.
